FERS Supplement Calculator
The FERS annuity supplement is a monthly payment OPM adds to your annuity if you retire on an immediate, unreduced FERS annuity before 62. This calculator estimates it from your Social Security estimate at 62 and your years of FERS civilian service, then applies the earnings test that reduces it if you work after your minimum retirement age.
Estimated FERS supplement · 28 years of FERS service
$1,330.00 a month
- Yearly supplement
- $15,960.00
- Earnings in 2027
- $40,000
- Reduction applied in 2028
- $7,220.00
- Monthly after the reduction
- $728.33
Add your date of birth and retirement date in step 1 to see the months until 62 and the total paid.
An estimate: OPM's own computation (5 CFR 842.504) uses federal earnings only, so your actual supplement can differ.
28 y 0 m → 28 years nearest whole year, at most 40
$1,900.00 × 28 ÷ 40 = $1,330.00 monthly supplement
($40,000 − $25,560) × 50% = $7,220.00 reduction, at most $15,960.00
($15,960.00 − $7,220.00) ÷ 12 = $728.33 monthly in 2028

How is the FERS supplement calculated?
The supplement equals your Social Security benefit at 62 multiplied by your years of FERS civilian service divided by 40. Service is rounded to the nearest whole year, with six months or more rounding up, and capped at 40. Military service and unused sick leave do not count. With $2,000 at 62 and 25 years, it is $1,250 a month.
That is the shortcut most estimates use. OPM's own computation, set out in 5 CFR 842.504, rebuilds an age-62 Social Security benefit from your federal earnings only, so your actual supplement can be higher or lower than this estimate. Use the result as a planning figure and expect OPM's number on your annuity statement.
Who qualifies for the supplement?
You qualify if you retire on an immediate annuity without an age reduction before 62: at your MRA with 30 years, at 60 with 20 years, or under an early-out or discontinued-service retirement. Those last two start the supplement only once you reach your MRA. MRA+10 retirees and deferred retirees never receive it.
Payments end when you reach 62, whether or not you claim Social Security then. Disability retirees do not receive the supplement either. Special-provision retirees such as law enforcement officers and air traffic controllers follow additional rules that this calculator does not model.
Worked example: 28 years and a job after retirement
A retiree with a $1,900 Social Security estimate at 62 and 28 years of FERS service gets a supplement of $1,330 a month, or $15,960 a year. If they earn $40,000 from a job in 2027, OPM reduces next year's supplement by $7,220, leaving $728.33 a month.
| Earnings in 2027 | Over the $25,560 limit | Yearly reduction (half the excess) | Monthly supplement in 2028 |
|---|---|---|---|
| $20,000 | $0 | $0 | $1,330.00 |
| $24,480 | $0 | $0 | $1,330.00 |
| $30,000 | $4,440 | $2,220 | $1,145.00 |
| $40,000 | $14,440 | $7,220 | $728.33 |
| $50,000 | $24,440 | $12,220 | $311.67 |
| $60,000 | $34,440 | $15,960 (capped) | $0.00 |
The reduction can never exceed the supplement itself, which is why the $60,000 row stops at $15,960. The calculator rebuilds this table with your own numbers.
How does the earnings test work?
If your wages or self-employment income after reaching your MRA exceed the Social Security exempt amount, OPM reduces your supplement by $1 for every $2 above it. The limit is $24,480 for 2026 and $25,560 for 2027. Earnings in one year reduce the supplement paid in the next year.
OPM collects these figures each year on its annuity supplement earnings report. Pensions, annuity payments, investment income and the annual leave payout from your final federal job do not count as earnings. Income earned before you reach your MRA is also excluded, which matters for early-out retirees who start before that age.
Does the supplement increase with COLAs?
No. The FERS supplement never receives a cost-of-living adjustment, so the amount set at retirement stays the same until it ends at 62, apart from earnings-test reductions. Your basic FERS annuity is a separate payment with its own COLA rules, covered in the FERS retirement calculator.
Because the supplement is flat, the "total paid to 62" line in the result is simply the monthly amount times the months remaining. For 2027, eligible FERS annuities receive a 2.6% COLA while the supplement stays unchanged.
Where do I find my Social Security estimate at 62?
Your my Social Security account at ssa.gov shows the benefit you would receive at 62 based on your full earnings record. That figure includes non-federal jobs, so it tends to overstate the supplement for anyone with significant private-sector earnings. The calculator uses whatever you enter and labels the result as an estimate.
If most of your career has been federal, the statement figure is a reasonable input. If you spent many years outside government, expect OPM's supplement, which uses federal earnings only, to come in below this estimate.
